How to Find and Use Coupon Codes Correctly

Few things are more frustrating than finding a promo code, filling your cart, and seeing “This coupon is not applicable” at checkout. Most failed coupons are not fake; they simply have conditions that the order does not meet. Understanding those conditions makes coupons far more useful.
Types of coupon offers
Online stores in India commonly use a few kinds of offers:
- Code-required coupons — you type or paste a code at checkout.
- Automatic offers — the discount is applied without a code when the cart qualifies.
- First-order or new-user coupons — valid only for a new account, device or app install.
- Bank and wallet offers — tied to a particular card, UPI app or wallet.
- Category or brand coupons — valid only on certain products.
On our coupons page, each offer is labelled as either “code required” or “automatic offer”, so you know whether there is anything to copy.
Where to find codes that work
- The store itself. Offer pages, the app’s coupon section, and the checkout page often list current codes.
- Brand newsletters and app notifications, if you are happy to receive them.
- Deal sites that show validity and verification dates. A code with no expiry date and no indication of when it was last checked is a guess. Ours show the last verification date and clearly mark expired coupons.
- Bank and card offer pages, for payment-linked discounts.
Be wary of codes shared through unknown messages that ask you to click links, log in or share an OTP. A coupon never requires your OTP or password. See online shopping safety: how to avoid fake deals.
Read the terms before you shop
Every coupon has conditions. The ones that cause most failures are:
| Condition | What it means |
|---|---|
| Minimum order value | The cart total must exceed a set amount, sometimes after other discounts are applied. |
| Maximum discount | A percentage coupon may be capped at a fixed amount. |
| Eligible products | Only certain categories, brands or sellers qualify. |
| User eligibility | New users only, app only, or one use per account. |
| Validity period | Start and end dates and times. |
| Payment method | Valid only with a specific bank, card or UPI app. |
How to apply a coupon correctly
- Copy the code exactly. Use the copy button where available. Codes are often case-sensitive, and a stray space can make them fail.
- Add only eligible items and check the cart total against the minimum order value.
- Apply the code on the cart or checkout page, in the field labelled “coupon”, “promo code” or “apply offer”.
- Check the discount line in the order summary before paying. If it is not shown, the coupon has not been applied.
- Choose the payment method last, after confirming the coupon, if the offer depends on the payment method.
Why a coupon fails — and what to do
- “Not applicable on items in cart”: one or more products are excluded. Remove them and try again, or check whether the coupon covers that category.
- “Minimum order value not met”: check whether the minimum applies before or after other discounts.
- “Coupon expired”: check the validity dates; some codes end at a specific time, not at midnight.
- “Already used”: many codes are single-use per account or device.
- “Cannot be combined”: some stores allow only one coupon per order, or do not combine coupons with sale prices.
If a code fails for a reason you cannot fix, move on. Testing dozens of unverified codes rarely works and wastes time.
Combining coupons with other offers
Stores differ on whether a coupon can be combined with a sale price, a bank offer or cashback. Where combining is allowed, the order in which offers are applied affects the final price. Always compare the final payable amount with and without the coupon, especially if using it changes which payment methods are available.
Do not let a coupon change what you buy
A coupon is only a saving if you were going to buy the item anyway. Adding products to reach a minimum order value can turn a ₹200 discount into a ₹500 overspend. Our guide on online shopping tips to save money covers this and other common traps.
Conclusion
Coupon codes work well when you know their conditions. Get codes from the store or a source that shows when they were last checked, read the minimum order and eligibility rules, copy the code exactly, and confirm the discount before paying.
